Florence Nightingale – The Mother of Data Visualization
Data visualization is the art of persuasion.
It is the ability to translate data and complex content into a graphic that delivers a strong message in a quick and simple manner.
In today’s business environment, we are pressed to deliver findings and recommendations in a concise, digestible format.
Too often we turn to technology for the “magic” solution to our challenge.
Based on her experiences and observations during the Crimean War, Nightingale took the challenge to convince the British Army High Command that bad hygiene was accountable for the majority of deaths during the war.
Nightingale produced a graphic that delivered a twofold message:
- Most of the fatalities during the war were due to sickness.
- The proper hospital hygiene dramatically reduced the death rate.
Her Graphic Was Instrumental
Nightingale’s creative presentation was instrumental in the improvement of military field hospital hygiene and survival rate of soldiers.
More than 150 years ago, using simple graphics Nightingale was able to win support for her quest to prove the correlation between bad hygiene and high death rates.
No Need to be Complex
Back office and line management and the communication of performance need not be complex and technology intensive.
Mastering the fundamentals of operational management is core to problem solving and business success.
Like Florence Nightingale, the simple approach can have a dramatic impact.
